WORK DESCRIPTION

Public interactivity is an integral part of my works. I use spatial and cultural sensation as starting point to create site specific situations, encounters with common life. I’m Interested in how we ract to our  physical environment and  how objects reflect cultural moments.

My work draws from the traditions of modernism and interest in situationism and conceptual art. Observing the social and ecological consequences of European modernism and industrialization.
In everyday practice I initiate, research and realize a large variety of projects; from fast  product statements, to pop-up installations and happenings.
BIO

Tuija Asta Järvenpää
Born in Saudi-Arabia, educated in The Netherlands, based in Finland,
Between 1985-1995 she followed art and design studies in Finland and in The Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.  As a young artist urban realms, consumerism and the ecological and ethical problematics of Industrial production became her prime subject.
Since 1995 she has been working in Helsinki with conceptual design and site specific happenings and performances. During 1995-2007 she created happenings like "THE FINNISH SUSHIBAR FISH", "SILENCE!"  and "SITE SPECIFIC". Year 2002 she was invited by Casino Luxembourg ⋅ Forum d'art Contemporain to attend a masterworkshop with Joep van Lieshout and Claude Closky about art and public space.
Next year a designer team: Susan Elo -Tuija Asta Järvenpää -Tuula Pöyhönen created "LIGHT GYM" for The National Contemporary Art Museum Kiasma in Helsinki. A site specific, interactive, aesthetic and kinesthetic installation. The piece was curated by Mrs Maaretta Jaukkuri for the exhibition "Encounters in Live Situations". The team had been active from 1998 presenting light related interactions  for urban nordic environments.
"BOUDOIR DE PARIS -Performance for a Public Space" took place in the streets of Paris in July 2003.  Feministicly articulated street art for the city of Paris; Ville de Paris. The feminist and consumer crtitical thematic continued in the  MARRY ME? -event organized together with Maria Duncker in Helsinki Kunsthalle 2005 with  A THROWAWAY WEDDING GOWN, her first public industrial design item. It was her statement for industrial practices. The gown got on tour  with "Sauma" exhibition presenting contemporary Finnish design in US.
As Helsinki was chosen to be the world design capital 2012, she created the JEE OFFICE for ecological, ethical and esthetic design to encourage ethical and ecological parctises and discussions. During 2008-2012 Jee Office created independent pop-ups, manifestos and concepts like ALL U NEED IS: and CAFE KEMIJÄRVI
Since 2008 she has been interested in the social  power structures in communication and in the designed environment. She attended a seminar on art and ecology by Timothy Morton in Paris 2015 and is now working on new pieses  e.g.  GARAGE REPAIR-ED, GALLERIA _/_2_3_N_5_9 and the WMN'S PARLIAMENT.
